How our unit conversions are calculated
Any Conversions uses a reference unit for each measurement category. Your value is first converted to that reference unit, then converted to every requested destination unit.
For linear conversions, the calculation follows: result = entered value × source factor ÷ destination factor. Temperature uses the appropriate affine formula because Celsius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin and Rankine do not share the same zero point.
The conversion factors are based on internationally recognized definitions and exact constants where available. Examples include 1 inch = 0.0254 metre exactly, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kilogram exactly and standard gravity = 9.80665 metres per second squared.
Results are calculated locally in your browser. We display enough significant digits for practical use while limiting unnecessary rounding noise. The precision control lets you adapt the displayed result.
We review formulas and unit factors when the catalogue changes. Despite these checks, results intended for safety-critical, scientific, medical, legal, financial or regulated use should be independently verified.
